NCF Consulting Enterprises
To ensure that the National Consumer Forum is an independent voice for consumers, it needs to finance itself through a number of innovative channels. One important source of funding is a social enterprise set up for this purpose: NCF Consulting Enterprises.
This is a registered company that provides services such as publishing, training and financial literacy – generating revenue for the organisation’s advocacy role and administration. The need for such on-going, sustainable revenue is vital, as donor funding into development NGOs in South Africa has dried up since 1994.
One of the main functions of NCF Consulting Enterprises is to publish the NCF’s national newspaper Consumer Fair, which generates revenue through advertising. The company also offers:
- Training to consumer NGOs in administration and organisational development
- Workshops in financial literacy and the National Credit Act
- Workshops in setting up small businesses, particularly in the transport sector
